Letter to Michelle Obama

Why Homeschooling should be considered for the Obama Girls

Dear Michelle,

Choosing a school can be such a difficult task, but when you are the first lady it can seem like an impossible one ( I'm sure). There are so many things to consider, but most of all, the biggest concern by far is the security of these precious children. This is why I am recommending that homeschooling be considered as an option for the Obama girls. Yes I know the first argument of the nay-sayers is 'what about the social development?' This is an age old argument which has no scientific basis or supporting evidence to suggest that homeschoolers are less prepared for the world socially than their schooled counterparts. In fact when you think about it twenty-four hour body guards and secret service personnel in the playground strikes me as being far more socially stigmatizing. Homeschoolers have a rich social life and most parents make it their duty to involve their children in a variety of activities in which they have numerous opportunities to integrate with other children. In fact just last night I was invited to attend a concert put on by a homeschool woodwind band. We were also entertained with ballet, choral pieces, prose and solos. Today I visited a homeshool group's end of term show- and- tell presentation where we were entertained by drama groups, spanish groups, gross and fine motor groups (just to name a few); kids of all ages coming together to display their talents; it was amazing. Through the homeschool networks friendships have been forged and it is obvious that these are well adjusted, well rounded, very intelligent children.
Now I know as first lady this may strike one as a difficult undertaking, with all the upcoming commitments and appointments in view. However, as astute as I know you are - as well as passionate about your children I believe that you will be able to manipulate your schedule for the benefit of your children. It is also in your power to solicit any help that you may require, even if it calls for a resident tutor.
The statistics show that homeschoolers are performing significantly better than their mainstreamed counterparts; their grades are head and shoulders above the rest. There is nothing to loose - this is a win-win situation.
Having said all of the above, I am not condemning your choice of education (as I have children that have done very well in both public and private education) I am merely suggesting that you consider the alternatives - it's all about CHANGE!
With deepest respect and admiration.
Jay
