Day 17, 348 to go

Vancouvapalooza! 2010
Sitting here waiting for the Vancouver opening ceremony I can hardly contain my excitement. However it appears that swimming rather than skiing may be more appropriate since Vancouver is reported to be the warmest city ever to host the Winter Olympic Games. There have already been reports of varying degrees of melting snow. My opinion? It'll be just fine. The media are always looking for an opportunity to get tongues wagging - its their job!

So, faces to look out for:

Mirai Nagasu - Figure Skater (USA)

And guess who her role model is - Christie Yamaguchi (who'd have thought!), and she got to meet her this morning. Good for her!

Then there's this young fellow Shaun White - Snowboarding (USA)

Now, I like him because he has had (oooh alliteration! 'hhh') setbacks in his life and still persevered. He had two major heart surgeries as a child to correct a defect.

And there's lots of other people too...

Sorry, I tried to appear knowledgeable but I have to confess I am the world's least knowledgeable person when it comes to sport. I ONLY jump on the bandwagon to get caught up in the hype and excitement when events reach the level of international hysteria. But folks I'm really not a follower - of anything! - OK I kind of like tennis now but that was for pragmatic reasons, it was the only way that I could guarantee a conversation with my sister throughout the summer.

Anyhooooo, the reason I follow at the end is because I just can't muster enough interest to sit and watch sports at length, but I  do have maximum respect for the athletes and competitors for choosing an activity and sticking with it to the level of mastery. They are true role models for all that follow.
Au revoir !
